Rapid Response (Yarmouth)

Rapid Response is a crisis home care service that was set up in 1998 to provide 24-hour access, seven days a week support from care assistants who are specially trained to deal with crisis situations.

These situations include night calls, personal care and practical services such as shopping in emergency situations. The services is free for up to 72 hours until a final assessment can be made by Social Services or a health professional can take place.

The aim of the Rapid Response service is to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospitals, residential and nursing homes. This is critical at a time where the government are trying to prevent bed-blocking situations in NHS hospitals. The service supports people returning to their own homes after a stay in hospital and people in crisis situations. It does this extremely well and we commend the individuals that enable Medico to run the service from the Great Yarmouth office.

"We were so grateful that Mum could stay at home. That was what she really wanted."
Daughter of a Service User, Great Yarmouth

"It´s all about the calls that need immediate attention. It works really well. It´s busy and helping to keep people out of hospital and residential care."
Emergency Duty Team Social Worker

"I do lots of visits with GP´s and district nurses – it is teamwork that is at the heart of this service."

Childcare / Family Support (Shefford)

In 1999, Bedford Social Services approached Medico Nursing and Homecare in Shefford, Bedfordshire, for their help in delivering a bespoke package of care to a family of 7 children. As a result a pilot department was set up within the branch to enable the care package to be delivered to the family in question. The package itself involved live-in care, overnight carers, and day care. And utilised approx five carers in the care delivery. The package continued over a 2-year period (until the children were found foster parents and/or re-homed.

Today Medico Shefford has a dedicated children´s care service and serves social services clients across the local region including Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, and Northamptonshire. They are currently providing upwards of 400 care hours per week to approximately 40 different service users.

Learning Disabilities (Crewe)

Our Medico Crewe branch operates a learning disabilities scheme across the region and provides specialist care to service users, one of which has been with Medico for nine years. The service allows the service user to have a far greater independent life, as assistance is provided with meals, social interaction and Sleeping Nights. In this particular case, Medico provides care seven days a week providing seven nights sits and thirty-one hours during the week to support independent living.

Physical Disabilities (Leighton Buzzard)

Medico Leighton Buzzard is currently developing working practices with the Physical Disability Team in Bedforshire These clients tend to require additional living support, with carers providing a bulk of daily tasks from domestic duties through to escorting clients on shopping excursions, etc. The carers develop a closer working relationship due to the extended hours that are spent in the client´s home. Recently we supported a client in her preparations to attend her daughter´s wedding. The staff spent time creating the perfect ‘Mother of the Bride’ and we were delighted to be able to help her achieve her ambition that she could attend her daughter´s marriage. Mind you the hat was in a precarious position but stayed put long enough for the photos!!
