Respite Care
What is it?
Respite care is a short break away providing ‘time off’ for the service user and the carer. Respite
can take place in a variety of settings including the service users own home. It may be for a few hours
a day at a day centre; or for a few days, a weekend or a couple of weeks in a residential home.
Our Objective
To provide the opportunity for the service user to take a short break from their existing carer arrangements.
How can we help?
As a carer there might be times when you need more than a few hours off, or an evening's break. Recognising this
can be very important. Obviously this is a decision made jointly between the carer and the person being
cared for. The service user may even be the one to suggest it. Both parties may enjoy the change of scene
and company. After a few days' break, it is hoped that the carer will feel rested and better able to manage
at home again.
With the respite care offered by Medico, the care worker will come to the service users home, day
centre, etc. and enable the individual to take a break for a while. This is often particularly suitable
if the person does not want to leave home or is unable to do so.
Respite care is providing support for those caring for others. It can help provide assistance in the long or short term
Benefits provided by respite care:
- Reassurance and peace of mind to the relatives and care workers of service users
- Providing assistance where required and needed – easing the burden and helping ease
the physical and mental demands of providing care
– We are only a phone call away.
